The Harris family in America, 1930.

Typescript of Solomon Harris' brief history of the Harris family from approximately the 1630s through 1920s. Begins with a description of Thomas Harris' arrival in the United States in 1630 as an English Baptist seeking relief from religious persecution and his subsequent participation in the founding of Providence, Rhode Island, and a beating he received after preaching in Boston. The manuscript then moves to the life of William Harris (possibly Thomas' brother), an assemblyman from Rhode Island who was captured and sold into slavery by Barbary pirates during one of his frequent trips to England. He was eventually ransomed and traveled through Spain and France back to London, where he died a few days after his arrival. The majority of the history is devoted to the life of Martin Harris in Palmyra, New York. Martin Harris was an early supporter of Joseph Smith who was chosen to be one of the three witnesses to the tablets used to write the Book of Mormon. The manuscript recounts the suspicion he fell under after losing the first translation of the tablets, as well as his travels preaching the divinity of the Book of Mormon. Includes a photostat of the same manuscript.
